Close up Magicians at your party

There are many so called “Close Up” Magicians advertising across the country. How do you pick the good from the bad?

A good close up magician can be used at any event: weddings, birthdays, first communions, confirmations or bar mitzvahs, baptisms or christenings, anniversaries, product launches and formal dinners. The question you must ask is how do you know if they are good or not?

Here are my tips on choosing a good Close Up Magician.

An entertainer with many years experience is a good sign, as they will know how to cope in situations that may not have been planned.

Ask them if they are members of: The Magic Circle, International Brotherhood of Magicians or more importantly Equity. Equity Union membership signifies that they have been able to prove they are a professional artist, by providing professional contracts of work. Another benefit of Equity Membership is that the artist will automatically have £10 million of public liability insurance.

A good close up magician will be a skilful magician. There are some magicians who use trick packs of cards and packet tricks that you can buy in joke shops, to create the illusion of them having skill. Make sure your entertainer has card skills. A simple question you can ask them is, “Have you heard of the Royal Road to Card Magic?” This is a book that most professional card entertainers will have come across if they possess skills in this field.

Increasingly, good magicians will have excerpts from their acts on YouTube or on their web site. Have a look at these sites and see if their style is what you are looking for at your event.

Be careful how much you spend. There is a saying, “Pay Peanuts and You Get Monkeys”. This is true when booking an entertainer. Pay too little and you may not be getting someone who is suitable. A guide for a reasonable fee is £100 per hour or up, depending where you live.

Talk to the entertainer and get a feel for the person and their personality. Their style can make or break the event. Make sure what they do, is what you want for your event. Don’t be frightened to ask many questions, A true professional won't mind answering any pertinent question.

For all enquires or to make a booking, ring Chris on 07941 5503150 or 01772 633363 or complete the enquiry form.
